Open Day – Wednesday 3rd October 2018

Our Open Day is being held on Wednesday 3rd October from 4.00 – 7.30pm, for September 2019 intake.  You can book an appointment to see the school during the day from Monday 8th to Friday 12th October 2018 at 9.15am (please call the office on 0118 9591868).

Information for the start of term

Entering and exiting the site

The one-way Bath Road entrance and exit can be used for drop-off (but not for parking).  There is a new pedestrian access from Bath Road, which runs alongside the vehicle exit road.  Alternatively, the school can be approached on foot through the Taylor Wimpey development, from Southcote Lane.  There is no drop-off or parking facility on Ruhemann Street.  There is no visitor parking on site, so I would suggest that you park at Prospect Park if needed.

Induction arrangements

Arrangements for each year group:

  • Thursday 6th September = Key stage 4 induction:

o   Year 10 only: 9:00 – 12:00

o   Year 9 only: 12:30 – 15:30

  • Friday 7th September = Key stage 3 induction:

o   Year 7 only: 9:00 – 12:00

o   Year 8 only: 12:30 – 15:30

The details of induction

Students may arrive 15 minutes before the start of their induction session; they should wear school uniform (no shorts) and bring the usual daily equipment with them (black pen, pencil, ruler, calculator, reading book) and, if they wish, a water bottle.  In addition to looking around our new facilities, each student will be given their new timetable, planner and rough book.  Locker allocations will be made and biometric data will be recorded to enable payment to be made using ParentPay for food purchased in our restaurant or café, which is cashless.  This is for students who did provide this information last term; a parental consent form needs to be received before we can do this.  Whilst we are waiting for our outdoor sports facilities to be completed (January 2019), there is, unfortunately, no outdoor space to play football, so these should not be brought to school.

Lessons begin!

The start of term 1 for all students is on Monday 10th September; gates open at 8:30 and learning begins at 8:50.  Staff will be on hand to direct students to the theatre.

Wrap around care

Wrap around care starts that evening and, whilst free of charge, should be booked via ParentPay.  The daily cost for social time (16:30 – 18:00 (17:30 on a Friday)) is £4.00, which is also bookable on ParentPay.

Visit the school

If you would also like an opportunity to visit the school;  we are offering tours between 16:00 and 18:00 on Friday 7th September.  In the meantime, you can view some photographs of the new accommodation on our website, which also includes a copy of the site plans.

Recruiting for a HLTA, ICT Technician and Exam Invigilators

As we move into our brand new multi-million pound building, we are seeking to appoint a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, an ICT Technician and Exam Invigilators.  For further information please go to the vacancies page under the School Information tab.  Closing date for application is midday Monday 3rd September 2018.  Suitable applicants may be invited for interview before the closing date.

Stop Press…….. The Wren School is aiming high with ‘Good’ Ofsted

The Wren School, a free school in West Reading, has been rated ‘Good’ following its first full Ofsted inspection in June 2018.

The Wren School, which opened in September 2015 on the former Presentation College/ Elvian Site on the Bath Road in Reading, currently has more than 400 students on roll, made up of Years 7, 8 and 9. It will open its planned sixth form in September 2020.

Ofsted rated the school as ‘Good’ across all inspection areas which included, effectiveness of leadership & management, quality of teaching, learning & assessment, personal development, behaviour & welfare and the outcomes of students. Headteacher, Jo Broadhead expressed her delight at the news ‘I am thrilled and so proud that Ofsted have judged us ‘Good’ in all categories, following our recent inspection. All the staff and governors at The Wren School have worked tirelessly for the past three years to create a school where children can receive a world-class education and are nurtured, challenged and inspired to aim high’.

The inspectors particularly commented that:

  1. The headteacher has established an ethos that enables students to succeed
  2. High aspirations for students’ achievement are evident throughout
  3. Students learn well and make good progress
  4. Students are very well looked after
  5. Parents and carers recognise staff’s dedication and care

The school opens its doors to brand new, purpose-built accommodation this September, designed to educate 1176 students when full – having been in temporary accommodation for the past three years. Jo Broadhead commented ‘We have designed a 21st century school that will be equipped with high quality resources across the curriculum that enhance learning to ensure that we are developing global citizens of the future’.

The Chair of Governors, Julia Cottee said ‘Since its inception, The Wren School has been a very exciting and rewarding project. The Ofsted result reflects the consistent approach and hard work from all the staff at the school, and we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved for making The Wren School vision a reality. We feel that this inspection validates the significant progress the school and trust board have made in providing a world-class education for the local community, and supports us in our journey to improve even further in the future’.

The Wren School is holding an open day on Wednesday 3rd October 2018, 4.00pm – 7.30pm for students wishing to join the school in September 2019 intake. Please come along and take the opportunity to talk to the teachers and current students and to view The Wren School in its new school building.
